Brittany is a female given name of French and Latin origins, after Brittany, a region of France. Brittany first came into use in America during the 1970s and was at its height of popularity during the 1990s in the USA and Australia.
"Brittany" is also derived from 'Britannia', a 2nd century Roman goddess. Early portraits of the goddess depict Britannia as a beautiful woman, wearing the helmet of a centurion, and wrapped in a white garment. She is usually shown seated on a rock, holding a spear. On another range of coinage, she is seated on a globe above waves: Britain at the edge of the (known) world. Especially following the Acts of Union in 1707, which joined the Kingdoms of England and Scotland, the personification of the martial Britannia was used as an emblem of British imperial power and unity. She has appeared consistently on British coinage ever since.
